Miranda is someone “in-between” (Bhaba, 1994), who is a daughter of colonizer Prosper and grew up with colonized figure Caliban. Not like her father, she doesn’t have notion of “otherness” (Said, 1978), and wants them to stop to hate each other, however she never tries to understands why and how Caliban suffers. There is colonizer’s insensitivity.

create organic harmony through fighting
Harmony and fighting might seem the opposite concepts. But actually this stick fighting is one of the best ways, which we found through this project, to feel sense of organic harmony. At first stage, I just taught Shu how to grab, hit and spin sticks just as choreography. Now I can say that there was no organic harmony between us, until my supervisor came to our rehearsal room. She pointed out the fact that I and Shu just follow choreography and there was not real response between us.
Jane Turner, a researcher of Eugenio Barba’s method, mention the risk that technique can dull an actor’s senses and consequently lead to a dull performance. She claims ‘…if they (performers) are hiding behind an armory of technique their story and actions will be dulled. They must melt the armor to penetrate beyond it and make real action and find real responses to impulses.’ (2004) Actually Barba uses boxing exercise to help actors responses to impulses.
My supervisor suggested us to consider details of fighting, for example, who attacks which part of the opponent and why attacks. And that brought us the moment when we can response to own and collaborators impulses, and also the moment we could find organic harmony. However it was impossible to have the moment like that constantly, due to lack of time to practice.
Once we think about technique, the impulse will never be felt and physical conversation will be easily cut out.
Miranda has been waited for Caliban, playing with him as they used to do. But Caliban is on the lookout for Prospero’s surveillance, and tries to avoid her.
